What is a Base Layer?

BASE LAYER AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING THEM?

In cold temperatures, the body may battle against wind, snow, sleet or rain and sometimes altitude. The next-to-skin layer or thermal underwear layer should include a top and bottom component. The main purpose of this layer is to wick away moisture from skin and allow warm air from your insulating-mid layers to reach your body. Thermal underwear can mean the difference between hypothermia and a satisfying trip.

Andie's Outdoor Undies can be worn alone or layered.

WICKING FABRICS USED IN BASE & LONG UNDERWEAR

Synthetic - Just a note: Many women who have tried Andie’s Outdoor Undies, say they normally don’t like a synthetic. After trying Andie's Outdoor Undies long underwear, they are so impressed with the feel and performance, they have switched. I appreciate these clients having and open mind and giving Andie’s Outdoor Undies a chance. The performance of the panty design would be very difficult to replicate with a wool fabric, as it doesn’t have the stretch that polyester/lycra blend has. Personally, I prefer a soft non abrasive, smooth as silk fabric ‘between my legs’ not something that could be itchy. A synthetic refers principally to polyester and polyester blends. Some underwear blends use high percentages of nylon (as a means of increasing abrasion resistance), or they add small amounts of spandex lycra) or elastin (to enhance stretch). The higher the lycra content makes for a smoother material. Normal – say in your stretch jeans – is 1-3%! Andie’s Outdoor Undies has 10%! Polyester, though, is the dominant synthetic fiber used in wicking first layers. It's a soft, easy-care fabric with reliable moisture-management attributes. When a synthetic fibers of the fabric are altered or textured – Andie’s Outdoor Undies uses a moisture wicking fleece and ChitoSante® Extreme – it will transport moisture more quickly.

WOOL:

This almost always refers to merino wool, which is popular due to its soft "ultrafine" fibers.

SILK:

Silk underwear is largely a specialty fabric, intended primarily for cool- and cold-weather usage. "Treated" indicates the silk has been chemically modified to enhance wicking (a fabric's capacity for moving perspiration off skin to speed its evaporation). Fans of silk are strongly attracted to its smooth texture.

COTTON:

Cotton thermal underwear is not good for much other than an extra layer while cozying next to the fireplace at home.
